A long-lived perennial growing up to 4 feet tall. Grows in full to partial shade and medium to medium-wet soils. The showy racemes of purple flowers primarily attract bumble bee queens. Seed pods provide visual interest into fall. Foliage generally avoided by mammalian herbivores. Blooms May to June.
